Unraveling the Yarn - A Palava FIlm

From fleece to yarn. A journey through British wool.

Why are we surrounded by sheep in Yorkshire, yet making so little use of the wool on our doorstep?

It's a question we've been asking ourselves at Palava, and one that has taken us on quite a journey.

Over the past few years, we've been exploring how we can do things differently. How can we make better use of our local resources? How can we support the people and skills behind British manufacturing? And how can a small business like ours make a difference?

In this film, we follow our wool from the sheep in the Yorkshire fields, through grading, washing and spinning, to our very own yarn.

Along the way, we've discovered just how much there is to learn. From the remarkable variety of British sheep breeds to the challenges of working with an industry built around large quantities.

We've even found a way to incorporate recycled scraps from our Wool Blanket Project into our new yarn, creating something rather beautiful and completely unexpected.

But this film isn't just about making yarn.

It's about the people, the knowledge and the industries we want to see survive. It's about asking questions, sharing what we learn and finding new ways of doing things.

The knowledge is just as important as the product.

And although we've reached the end of this film, we're certainly not at the end of our journey.

We still have plenty of questions. And we're looking forward to discovering the answers.
